Introduction

The knight blockade is one of the most important defensive techniques in endgames with passed pawns. A knight sitting in front of a passed pawn completely stops it — and unlike a bishop, the knight doesn't lose any mobility from the blockade square because it jumps over pieces. However, the knight also has a critical limitation: it takes a specific number of moves to reach any given square, and there's no shortcut. The knight must begin its journey toward the a-file immediately. Nf2 is the only knight move that draws — from f2, the knight can reach d3 in one jump, which is on the path to blockade the pawn. Ng3 looks reasonable but actually loses! After Ng3, the knight needs two more moves to reach c1 or a2 (via e2 or e4), but Black's pawn gets there first.
