Outflanking is the technique of approaching the enemy king from the side when a direct frontal attack doesn't work. In King and Pawn endgames, if the defending king holds the opposition head-on, trying to push straight through is futile. Instead, the attacking king steps sideways — going around the defender to reach the critical squares. In this position, pawns are locked on e5 and e6. White's king on d4 cannot advance directly because Ke4 allows Black to take the opposition with a draw. The winning idea is Kc5 — swinging the king to the queenside to outflank Black's king. From the side, White's king can penetrate to the 6th rank and eventually capture Black's pawn.

The outflanking move! Instead of heading straight toward the pawns (Ke4 draws), White's king goes sideways to c5. This is the key idea: when the direct path is blocked by opposition, go around. From c5, the king threatens to march up the queenside (Kb6) where Black's king cannot maintain the blockade. Only Kc5 wins — every other move draws.
